Thinking of Maggie

Maggie has been Sherry’s dog for as long as I can remember, for many years. I can hardly remember a visit without Maggie being there, Sherry found Maggie up in the Great Smokey Mountains, it was snowing and she was just beside the highway, She was up there camping, She stopped opened the door, and Maggie has been with her ever since, Sherry checked the campsites close by, but noone had seen her, there were no dogtags. Maggie was and is a beauty. She has the most human eyes hidden behind all the hair. It’s not going to be the same at Christmas without her. Sherry would always give her a cute Christmas scarf. This is one of my favorite ones with Sherry and her although there are many. My mom just emailed me that they are putting her to sleep today at 1:00 p.m. Keep my sister in your thoughts, she’s had Maggie longer than any boyfriend, or even her husband. I think she’s had her for almost 14 years. We will all miss you Maggie, I’m glad I got to spend Thanksgiving that night with you on my lap on the couch.Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.Maggie will be there. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent. Her eager body quivers. Suddenly she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your Maggie, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

  1. Derek – that is the sweetest post – I am just sitting here in tears… You sister is in my prayers…

  2. I’m P.O.’d. If you are going to write a post like that, then you need to offer free tissues!

Oh, does Maggie sound (and look) like such a sweetheart! I read that post and my eyes swelled. I remembered my first two dogs. I’ll tell you right now, if dogs are not allowed in wherever I am destined to be after this life, then I’m not going!

    Such a great post, Derek!

  3. Beautiful as always D.

Your sister is a beutiful person, inside and out.

  4. Oh wow, what a way to start the weekend….and right here at the holidays. Thinking big loving thoughts of you guys…..hugs and more hugs.

  5. Hi Derek,

First time I’ve commented on your site. That was truly a wonderful tribute to a dog that was obviously so much more than a “family pet”.

I lost my first dog Max when I was eighteen, he had been in my life since I was two, so I empathize with your sisters pain. All the best to her.

Once again, thanks for the post. Besides honoring Maggie, I’m sure many found that it brought back some warm memories of pets that have past. It did for me.

  6. Sending my love…

I’m sitting here looking at Jake all curled up asleep on my pillow.

Did you know that Ken’s baby, Valerie, passed this week, also?

  7. Sorry to hear about your loss. Makes me want to cuddle with my boys a little longer today.
